Student demonstrations are treated with some suspicion by veteran communists. The 1968 student riots in Paris were not backed by the powerful French Communist Party who argued that once they university vacations began, the students would be heading home – and factory workers would lose their jobs. A counter-demonstration headed by Andre Malraux, De Gaulle’s Culture Minister, attracted a huge crowd of supporters as it made its way down the Champs Elysees – showing that large numbers of people on the streets can work both ways.
So the key is: Where do the people who make Hong Kong tick stand? Hong Kong’s share of Chinese GDP fell from 16% to 3% last year. Yes, it is a valuable platform for foreign capital to enter China. But China wants to establish Shanghai as a global financial centre by 2020. Will they also want to see Shanghai as the centre for the internationalisation of the renminby rather than Hong Kong?
Meanwhile, rain remains the policeman’s best friend.
